Of all the tasks on the farm, one thing I really love to do is mow. Our push mower has been broken for a couple of months, and I’ve been ready to mow! I finally got a chance to drive the tractor with the bush hog attached. I loved every minute, even the part where I took out the fence, and ran over the irrigation lines! Fun, fun! Hopefully Paige will overlook those minor details and let me back on the tractor.
We’ve got a few things planted in the ground this week…strawberries, lettuce, spinach, chard, and tomorrow we will prepare for planting garlic. Sweet potatoes will soon be in the share. The deer loved eating on the leaves of our sweet potato plants, so there aren’t as many sweet potatoes as we would have liked.
Some of our CSA members will be happy to know that the eggplant, peppers, and okra saw their last harvest this week. If you have plans to store the peppers they can be stored for up to two weeks in a spot that ranges from 50 to 55 degrees F. If planning to store greens…all greens prefer a cool, moist (but not wet) environment. Store sturdier greens like kale and mustard loosely wrapped in plastic or vegetable storage bags in the crisper section of the fridge. The crisper section has high humidity, so vegetables should last a little longer when stored there.
