We hope you enjoy our new harvests of celery and Yukon Gold potatoes as we wait for a new succession of summer squash and cucumbers. Our green beans and tomatoes continue to be plentiful and we have yet to find ourselves in shortage of basil. Our okra plants have received the most attention lately, growing so much fruit so quickly that we've been harvesting almost daily. Several beds of potatoes still wait to be dug up as new sweet potato leaves continue to grow green and healthy.
We have also begun preparing for the fall harvest, when sun-loving vegetables like zucchinis, melons and tomatoes die off. Not only have we begun harvesting and storing successions of winter squash including yellow delicatas, sweet butternuts and bright orange pumpkins, we have also begun the process of delicately growing and nursing fall greens in the mild climate of the greenhouse. These cool-weather plants include broccoli, cabbage, kale, lettuce and leeks, whose dark green leaves can withstand a considerable amount of frost. Served alongside baked butternuts or a warm delicata soup, these green veggies can make a meal as colorful and delicious as those dishes we are now all enjoying filled with ripe summer tomatoes and beautiful purple eggplants.
In addition to our new baby greens, we are happy to welcome the kids of Camp Serenbe to the farm. Already, they have helped pick for us the bluest and most luscious blueberries to make blueberry ice cream at the Salsa Festival on August 12th. We also look forward to Turtle's return to the farm this week. With her help and companionship, we hope to give you another delicious and beautiful share again next week.
